DC Latino Caucus Announces Candidate Endorsements in the DC June 2, 2020 Democratic Primary

The DC Latino Caucus (DCLC) is proud to announce its member endorsements of the following candidates running in the June 2, 2020 District of Columbia Democratic Primary:

  • Ward 2 Council : John Fanning
  • Ward 4 Council: Janeese Lewis George
  • Ward 7 Council : Vincent Gray
  • At-Large Council: Robert White
  • US Delegate to the House of Representatives: Eleanor Holmes Norton
  • US Senate (Shadow): Paul Strauss
  • US President: Joe Biden

The DCLC's membership declined to endorse candidates in the races for Ward 8 Council and US Representative (Shadow).

The DCLC conducted two rounds of voting online due to the coronavirus situation. Candidates required 51% of the member vote to obtain endorsement. Several candidates won endorsement in the first round, including:

Robert White for At-Large City Council, with 78% of the vote
Eleanor Holmes Norton for US Delegate, with 74% of the vote
Paul Strauss for US Senator (Shadow), with 52% of the vote
Joe Biden for US President, with 76% of the vote

In the uncontested race for US Representative (Shadow), Oye Owolewa was unable to obtain the vote of 51% of the membership required to earn an endorsement.

No candidate in the contested races for Wards 2, 4, 7, or 8 received 51% of the vote in the first round and moved to a runoff vote between the top two vote recipients in each race. Additional candidates won endorsement in the second round, including:

John Fanning for Ward 2 with 57% of the vote
Janeese Lewis George for Ward 4 with 54% of the vote
Vincent Gray for Ward 7 with 65% of the vote.

In Ward 8, neither Trayon White nor Mike Austin received the required 51% of the vote to earn an endorsement.

We want to thank our membership for participating in this endorsement vote, which is an important opportunity to voice our community's views on the best candidates to represent Latino interests. We also want to thank every candidate that took the time to submit responses to a questionnaire on Latino issues provided by the DCLC to help inform members, and especially thank those candidates who took the time to return the questionnaire in both English and Spanish.

We look forward to assisting our endorsed candidates win election on June 2.
